the nationals. tonight, the nationals had a chance to return the favor thanks to a little help from the braves. their guys couldn't get anything going. kyle kendricks was dominant. but in pittsburgh, the pirates came through. a brave's lost also meant a national league east title. fans in d.c. found out immediately as the team went back into the dug out. everybody started celebrating and then it was time for the champagne to flow. the nats, your 2012 national league east champions. >> you've been dreaming about this, i'm sure, for years. is it what you imagined it would be? >> we have a great group of guys. i love everyone on this team. for the first time, this is pretty unbelievable. it's speechless. >> reporter: that's bryce harper. he's only 19 years old. he celebrated not with champagne, not with beer, but with apple cider. 23 cases of champagne was used in the celebration. here's a t-shirt that everybody's wearing tonight here at the park and everybody is going to be looking for in the near future all over washington, d.c. for more, ericgonzalez outside the park. >> all right. thanks a lo

their fans at around 9:45 when the pittsburgh pirates up in pittsburgh beat the atlanta braves. so with that the nats became the national league east champions. here, this is from masn what it looked like inside. the place went nuts. it was between the top and bottom of the 9th inning here and the nats are down 2-0 at the point, but because the braves lost in pittsburgh the nats are nl east champs. take a look at these people, going crazy still. game. one on for david ross, lifts one high to left center giving the braves the early lead. top of the 6th, cardinals leading 3-2. they add another with a laser shot from matt holliday. cardinals up 4-2, but pay attention to this play. bottom 8, braves down three with runners on first and second. simmons pops one up to shallow left. the shortstop goes back for it and thinks he's called off at the last second. so the ball drops. the runners advance, but simmons is called out on the infield fly rule. check out the ump in the far left corner on the replay. moments before the ball hits the ground he signals the infield fly. braves manager not to pleased, comes out to argue, game put under protest and the fans are irate. the players are forced to leave the field. it was a 19 minute day. the protest disallowed. after the delay the braves had bases loaded, but jason mott got michael bourne to strike out. the cardinals celebrate their wildcard victory with a little champagne. first we hear from the braves skipper. >> i thought the shortstop had to go way out there to make the play on-th

against the phillies, but it doesn't matter. the braves lost to the pirates and that was all we needed to clinch the division. derek is there tonight. >> reporter: it was the wildest experience you've had. as you mentioned the nats lost the game but won the n.l. east and that's all anybody will remember about this night. it was the ninth inning when the scoreboard read up in that park that the pittsburgh pirates knocked off the atlanta braves and the party started right away. people started getting the word on their smart phones. they started cheering. the nats came out of the dugout and began to get ready. the party moved to the locker room once the game was over. if you've not been inside a locker room when a pennant is won it is an experience. take a look at this. players everywhere, champagne everywhere, beer is everywhere. i saw the team walking around, very excited, very happy. everybody offering congratulations. they couldn't have been more sense of destiny for this team. remember, it's only a few years since the expose moved here all the way from canada. the team was terrible.
